Every Word of Encouragement Matters
Every child learns differently, and every step forward deserves to be celebrated.
Here you’ll find short notes written to encourage our students to persevere through challenges, believe in their abilities, and discover the joy of learning Chinese.
Sometimes, a few kind words can make all the difference.
WHEN YOUR MIND MOVES FAST
There is nothing wrong with being born with a quick brain. You just need to learn to slow down — and that is something we can practise together.
WHEN YOU COMPARE YOURSELF TO OTHERS
Don’t measure yourself against the child beside you. Measure yourself against who you were yesterday. A little better each time — that is how 70 quietly grows into 90.
WHEN YOU WONDER WHY WE AIM HIGH
We aim high not to beat anyone, but because growing your skill gives you the freedom to do what you love. And we do it happily — never pushing ourselves until we break.
WHEN YOU MAKE A MISTAKE
You can always tell me the truth; telling the truth is brave. And when you get something wrong, you don’t need to be afraid. Just say, “I did it wrongly, and here is what I’ll do next time.” That is enough.
WHEN YOU WRITE
Don’t worry first about marks. Write what is truly in your heart. Your feelings matter, and they deserve to be written down.
WHEN YOU FORGET YOUR WORTH
Your marks are not your worth. You matter just the same whether you score 50 or 90. We grow your marks because there is more inside you — never because you are ‘not enough.’
WHEN CHINESE FEELS SCARY
If the language feels frightening, that’s alright. We don’t run from the fear — we make friends with it, one small step at a time. Soon it won’t be scary at all.
WHEN YOU ARE DOING WELL
Wonderful — now stay humble and kind. There is always a bigger world to learn from, beyond your marks and beyond Singapore.
ABOUT OUR CLASS
In here, no one laughs at your results. We are a study group, learning side by side. You are safe to try, to stumble, and to try again.
Small things I say to my students — and hope they carry with them.
